Are You Making Mistakes That Keep Your Hemorrhoids Coming Back?

Picture
Sore and swollen veins in or around your bottom are called hemorrhoids or piles. I’m assuming that if you have them, you know you do, and you know a bit about them. Generally a painful bout of hemorrhoids will heal by itself after a week or two and then you're likely to forget about the episode. Without correcting some chronic mistakes, however, they will very likely strike again whether it takes weeks or months.

Some causes of hemorrhoids include:

•Pushing too hard when using the toilet
•Staying on the toilet too long
•Anal intercourse
•Weak muscle tone
•Slouching posture
•Chili and other hot spices
•Gravity (too much standing)
•An over-acidic pH imbalance

There are other potential causes for hemorrhoids including an inherited tendency to get them, pregnancy or advanced age but I’m focusing here on some of the causes we can do something about. If you want to heal your hemorrhoids you might be making some of the mistakes below.

Straining and pushing during bowel movements

Pushing and straining to move the bowels is likely the biggest culprit that triggers painful hemorrhoidal flare ups. The biggest reason you strain on the toilet is constipation. If everything slid out smoothly and easily there'd be no reason to push. So eating a low-fiber diet rich in convenient, highly processed foods is a major mistake.

You further compound this problem if you don’t typically drink a lot of water. Lack of water dries your stool making it more difficult to pass.

Move your bowels as soon as possible once you feel the need. Though impractical, the best posture for moving your bowels is to squat like you're out in the woods. The closest you can get is raising your feet onto your toes and the balls of your feet while leaning forward so your elbows touch your knees. This allows a more open, straight path for evacuation.

Another mistake is wiping your bottom too roughly or too long. Damp toilet paper can work well, and go gently. Try not to create any unnecessary abrasion and irritation.

Living in technologically and economically advanced countries makes us more prone to suffer from hemorrhoids. They remain a nearly unknown disorder in tribal communities without processed foods and sit-down toilets.

Too much sitting - whether on the toilet or at work

Sitting on the toilet with your bottom unsupported for extended periods is a mistake. Reading, talking on the phone or doing anything else that encourages you to sit longer only makes the situation worse.

And then you probably go and sit all day at work. While technically a mistake, this is typically an inescapable fact of office life. You may very well have to sit in a chair for long periods during the day, like it or not. You can relieve the pressure somewhat by getting up every hour or so, just for a minute, and stretchiing or walking to get your blood flowing a little. Good, comfortable, well-padded chairs can also be a great help.

Habitual inactivity - A tendency to neglect physical activity and exertion

Regular exercise to improve muscle tone and get your heart pumping will stimulate more healthy bowel functioning. Many authorities agree the absence of regular exercise to get your blood pumping is a mistake for those looking to heal hemorrhoids. Exercising your buttocks also helps.
